| Race Report from Ron Horton (getting to the Start Line): Serendipity. One of my favorite words. What you find when you are looking for something else. It was that kind of weekend in Kentuckiana. A Serendipity weekend. We flew into Louisville to run a race, we got so much more out of the weekend. Serendipity.
In
the Atlanta Airport - Greg and I met Jennifer,
a CMPD runner who was proudly Greg and May and Wendy and Jeff and I arrived around lunchtime in Louisville, headed to the Expo. Got our race stuff, did a little shopping, met Josh as he drove in later in the afternoon. Back to the hotel, rest a little, then Billiam came by to lead us to the Schroeders' for the Encounter. What an evening. SO much fabulous food, great conversation, feeling instantly at home as the locals welcomed us all. A time to renew old friendships and make new ones. It's one of the things that makes this sport so meaningful. Who would think you could fly into a new city and just a few hours later be completely comfortable sharing dinner with people you never met; yet feel like you knew them forever? Serendipity. Race morning came early, our Scream Team (Wendy and May) drove Jeff, Greg, and me out to the start. This is a point to point race. We found a parking spot a block from the start line, so we had time to rest (Greg) and take care of important stuff in those lines in the park (Jeff and Me).
Jeff found Josh's 3:30 pace group, while Greg and I moved as far forward as we could in the starting grid, ending up beside the 4:30 pace group. This race started almost 11,000 runners on a 4 lane residential street, quite a crowd to squeeze in. At 0730 the front started moving, and about 4 minutes later the mats chirped as we headed out for 26.2. Most of the runners were running the half - about 10,000 - while the remaining 1,000 were taking on the full.
