| Race Report from Ron Horton (Mile 22 to the Finish):
Coming off the bridge and back into Kentucky - keeping those feet close to the ground! On the way back across the bridge I met Jeff walking, escorted by Terry and Billiam. Feeling better that my good friend was back on his feet, I pushed on. Lost the nice breeze as I came off the bridge, and tried not to get over confident. After all, I've been feeling good at mile 24.5 before and ended up in the medical tent on a similarly hot day. But this day would not end badly. Though the last mile and a half seemed to take forever, soon I passed the 26 mile sign, made the turn from 7th onto Market, and saw the finish line one block ahead. Passed a race walker with 100 feet to go (hey, it's a race!) and heard those comforting double chirps that mean it's all over. Marathon #71 for me and a bonus - it was my best time in over four years, since running the Birmingham (AL) Marathon in Feb 2003.

Here is the suprise Marathon participant - Becky Buckeye! After a couple of years AWOL, she showed up, complete with her Bower and goodies from past races. She is back in travel mode - so someone let me know where to send her next!
We added a pin from Kentucky Derby 133 (run on the Saturday after the Marathon) to Becky's Bower
Always let the ladies pick the ponies After the marathon we found Jeff resting in his room. By late afternoon he was feeling good enough to enjoy Italian post-marathon dinner at Tubby's in Jeffersonville. Nice local place, good food and good people. On Sunday morning we drove the course to show Wendy (and Jeff) what it all looked like. Sunday afternoon Wendy and I headed out to Churchill Downs for the Spring Races. Ten events, lots of fun watching beautiful horses and beautiful people. $2 admission, we're guessing it will cost more on Derby Day. A few more pictures are posted at www.ronhorton.com. Overall, a great weekend. Good course, decent support, great volunteers, and lots to do before or after the marathon in the Louisville area. But the best thing about the weekend - Serendipity. Meeting people and having them open their home to you. Having people step in and come to the aid of a fallen runner, showing a heart of caring that makes this sport so special. We can never give enough
thanks to Jim and Dianne, David and Francis, Terry and Sherry, Cher
and Milt, and Bill and Jody. You all welcomed the Charlotte crew and
made the weekend one to remember. This is the last page in this report, click here for the first page click
