July 8, 2005 Grandfather Mountain Marathon 38th running |
|
| Race Report - Jane Fraytet, Charlotte, NC: Ran Grandfather Mountain Marathon Yes, I survived. It is amazing what the human body can do. I am not a fast runner, but I do hang-in there. It was very hot and hilly the first 5-10 miles, then I did get some shade while working my way up Grandfather Mountain. Well nature called me and I used some kleenex on a side road-time flys when you take a break and the second time I was lucky enough to find a Porta-John near a new house being built on a dirt-gravel road. Then the blisters on both feet starting giving me trouble, well I am not a quitter, but between the heat and the blisters, I felt like I was having a melt-down. Not five miles from the finish line, but what did I see-a runner going slower than me. Well the sight of seeing someone going slower than me lifted my spirits and I just race walked past him and beat him by a good five minutes. I was worried I would not
go fast enough to be an official finisher, but I made it and they
gave me a finisher medal and some gatorade. Life doesn't get any better
than that! Did I tell you that it was a mountain I climbed and some
of that mountain was in my head-but mostly I just took it 1 mile at
a time and finished standing upright and proud. |
