Race Report by Ron Horton
The defining moment of the New York City Marathon this year
came for me just after mile 24.
My “high-five” muscle cramped, rendering my left arm useless.
Really. It did.
SHORT VERSION:
Ross is a 28 year old from right here in Charlotte. He is one of my older son’s best friends. On a cold blustery day Ross and I toured the five boroughs as he experienced the World’s Greatest Marathon. This was also his first marathon – but here in the Big Apple you don’t RUN a marathon, you EXPERIENCE it. You immerse yourself in the circus, the celebration, and the support that goes on for miles and miles and hours and hours. In our case it took us only 2:14 to hit the mile 13.1 sign on the Pulaski Bridge, but by that time Ross’s calves were already giving signs of trouble. He adjusted well and we finished in 4:49 for an outstanding First Marathon. He then strode triumphantly through the tree lined paths of Central Park, wearing the Mylar cloak fit for a King – appropriate for his initiation into that select group of Royalty called Marathoners. As he walked into the open arms of his wife and friends waiting on Central Park West his life had been changed forever; changed by running 26.2 miles while being cheered on by 2.5 million spectators; changed by facing the mental roadblocks that give you so many opportunities to just say “I Quit”; and changed by living life to the Max for one glorious God-given day.
