SATURDAY NIGHT
PENGUIN ENCOUNTER:
|
|

On the Subway on the way to the Penguin
Encounter...but it wasn't just another trip... |

...NO!!! First we had to WALK down the steep steps in
the picture on the right, then RIDE BACK UP the escalator, 'cause
SOMEBODY (note who is grinning in center picture) took us the wrong way!
Then we went by the Plaza Hotel (far right - where Dean Burrow, another
CAP, ruined the next four generations of Burrows with his proposal to
Joy) as we dropped by NY Athletic Club trying to find a fellow Charlotte
runner - who was hanging out with Bill Rodgers at the time! |
|

On the left, Doug and Ryan practice looking tired -
they are on 1st Avenue with the Mile 17 banner hanging behind them. They
will be coming by this way tomorrow! On the right, the exterior of
Padrone's, the wonderful restaurant on the Upper East Side where Daniel
Wellner arranges the encounter each NYCM for Deads and Penguins. |

This encounter at Padrone's is a highlight of the trip
to NYC each year. L to R: RunAbe and Julia; Alan Leggatt, Abe, Julia, and Peggy
Harper; Peggy, Chad Brooks and his wife (from Philly), and Ryan; Daniel,
Richard Braeken (from Toronto), and Glenn Gabriel, head of the Toronto
Penguins and INCREDIBLE Scream Teamer...more on that later. |
|

Left: Glenn, Ellen Fernandes from Brooklyn, and Richard. Right:
Julia, Daniel, Harriet, Abe |

More encountering...in the pic on the right, I'm
laying out Scream Team Strategy with Julia, based on previous years in
NYC. With just a couple of subway rides, you can see runners several
times along the course, starting at Mile 3! |
|

Group shot of the Penguins outside Padrones, just
after we debated if the Woman (passerby) in Red really was a woman and
just before we all headed home.
Included in the picture (not in this order): Milt and
Cheryl Link, Harriet Kang, Alan Leggatt, Julia Kim,
Ryan Townsend, Glenn Gabriel, Ron Horton, Mike Weber, Richard Braeken,
Peggy Harper, Abe Slominsky, Doug Shearer, Ellen Fernandes |
|
LATER SATURDAY
NIGHT:
|
|

We headed back to the Portland Square - but you never
can tell what awaits you when you hang out with young guys. That's Ryan
on the far left, working the cell phone in Times Square. We tried on the
hats from the goodie bag in the middle photo, and two of Ryan's friends
responded to the cell phone call and dropped by the room to help us
paint the Pink Banner to be used on Sunday to identify the Penguin
Condo at Fort Wadsworth. The song is almost true - you really can't
resist a "Sharp Dressed Man" - except when he's older than
your Dad! |
