About This Year's 2013 Ride
500
miles in 4 days. Really. We're serious.
No SAG buses, no shortcuts.
-
Thu
5/9 – Leave 0900 from CMPD HQ in Charlotte, fully escorted
by CMPD officers (traffic stopped along route) to Harrisburg. Then
continue on to Asheboro (click
here for route). Our arrival into Asheboro will be escorted by
Asheboro PD. Total distance: 95 miles
-
Fri
5/10 – Leave Asheboro escorted by Asheboro PD and Randolph
County Sheriff, our first rest stop of the day will be at the Victory
Junction Gang Camp, a fabulous organization. The route then takes
us to Greensboro, NC. The Greensboro PD and Guilford County Sheriff
escort us into Greensboro where we stop at the Fallen Officers' Memorial
at the Police HQ. We then leave and ride to Gibsonville, NC where
we will stop for lunch at Reno's at the town square. On the square
is a memorial to their Police Chief who was killed in the line of
duty on May 2, 1940. From Gibsonville we ride cross country to South
Boston, VA. (click
here for route) Total distance: 118 miles
-
Sat
5/11 – Leave South Boston, taking back country roads
toward Richmond, VA. Along the way we pick up Bike Route 1, the bicycle
equivalent of highway US1 up the East Coast. (click here for tentative
route). The second rest stop is at Timmy's (Home of the World Famous
Timmy Dog, you'll have the opportunity to try one) in Victoria, VA.
Our lunch break is at Sandy Creek Baptist Church where the Ageless
Wonders (their Senior Group) will feed us. Then we ride through
Paineville, VA (really) and pick up our escort - the last 30 miles
into Richmond are escorted by Richmond and Chesterfield PDs and Chesterfield
County Sheriff. Total distance: 139 miles
-
Sun
5/12 – Richmond to DC. Because we are arriving a day
earlier than previous years to give us time to prepare for attending
the Candlelight Vigil, this year we won't be riding with Bike
for the Blue. Our route will be escorted out of Richmond,
then take back roads across the rolling VA countryside until we pick
up an escort in Manassas VA - and ride the rest of the way into our
nation's capital under escort..
Total distance: 148 miles
- Mon 5/13
- the morning is free for sightseeing in Washington, DC. In mid-afternoon
we will gather together and walk to Judiciary Square to attend the Candlelight
Vigil at the National Law Enforcement
Officers Memorial on Sunday evening. This is an especially moving
service that honors our fallen officers; it is the purpose of the entire
trip.
-
Tue
5/14 – Return to CMPD HQ via vans (we would love
to make it a round trip bicycle ride, but we just don't have time!)
