About This Year's Ride

How You Can Help

We will have over 100 riders and support personnel making the trip this year. We need your help. How? Here are a few ways:

  • Money. We need money for fuel, lodging, and other expenses for all the riders and support crew PLUS we want to add to the fund taht benefit's officers through the Charlotte Mecklenburg FOP Foundation. With more participants this year the total $$ needed will increase. Finding one donor to write the Big Check would be great; however, it wouldn’t take that many small donors to make a big difference. Last year the community was very generous and we were able to meet our fundraising goal. We know this year will be a challenge - and due to the number of riders, our goal for this year is $70,000.
  • Bike to DC partners with Charlotte Mecklenburg FOP Foundation, a well established 501(c)3 forganization. Any money raised in excess of expenses will go toward a fund the Foundation uses to provide assistance to law enforcement officers in need.

  • Vehicles. We need vehicles to haul food, luggage, bikes, and cyclists! Last year these companies helped us, a big thanks to them:
  • U-Haul and Enterprise each provided a 17' truck to haul luggage and food during the trip.

Coach America helped us with coaches to transport our officers back from DC to Charlotte after the end of our ride.

Charlotte Van and Storage transported our bicycles back from DC to Charlotte after the end of our ride.

We still need fuel for the vehicles, it's a major expense.

  • Lodging. We have reservations in Asheboro (Fairfield Inn and Holiday Inn Express), South Boston (Holiday Inn Express and Fairfield Inn), Richmond (Hilton Garden Inn), and DC (Palomar Hotel)– but have been unable to get any “deals” when making those reservations. If you have any contacts with any of those chains that might be able to help us with comped rooms or even discount rates that will make a big impact. Any help here would be huge - lodging accounts for most of our expenses.
  • Food and drink. We had several generous donors last year who gave things like:
  • Gift Cards for meals (Thank You Subway)
Gift Cards for groceries (Thank You Harris-Teeter, Sams Club)
Water and sports drinks (Thank You Coca-Cola, Harris-Teeter, and Pepsi)
Snacks along the way - crackers, pretzels, chips (Thank You Lance)
Gels, Nutrition bars (Thank You Carolina Smoothies, Inside Out Sports, Harris Teeter)

These were lifesavers - we need such generosity again this year!
  • Publicity. Spread the word about the ride. Direct people to this website. Even if you don’t raise money, it will raise awareness.

Regarding your contributions:

All funds raised in excess of expenses go to the Charlotte Mecklenburg FOP Foundation, a non-profit foundation that provides financial assistance to families of slain officers, officers who become incapacitated due to sudden illness or injury, and officers affected by catastrophic circumstances which could leave them and their families without financial security. The Foundation is a well established 501(c)3; however, you should always consult with your tax return preparer regarding the eligibility of your donation as a deduction on your income tax return.

To arrange pickup of any contributions or to ask any questions call Ron Horton on 704.336.7252 or click here to email at
