CENTURY SATURDAY - into the Inferno

The Rest Stop in Pageland SC was manned by the cutest Brownies from Charlotte.
They had a South Pole theme (see the Penguins!) because they wanted us to feel cooler on such a hot day!

There is ALWAYS a gas tanker at this intersection beyond Pageland. Every year. No driver in sight, engine idling. No idea why.
On the right, fellow NSCU Alum Eric pulls the Big Hills

Eric, his wife Alicia, and friends

We would catch up with Elizabeth and Jeff and the Xtremes at rest stops, but only for a minute

Society Hill, SC - lunch! Mile 76 for the Century Riders. That's BellSouth's Jay Jarrell on the left with his buds, they averaged about 19.5 to this point (which is why they look a little spent). OTOH, Mike and Ron averaged WAY less than that and still look whupped!

While we were enjoying the sandwiches, pasta salad, and lots of trimmings graciously prepared by the Charlotte Ski Bees I checked my phone. The Diaper Dash (aka 75 milers) were already in Florence getting their massages! We still had 35 miles to go, so it was back on the road...in the heat.

Ortho Carolina ("Bones R Us") leads our BootyLoop friend while Mike navigates the desolate roads to Darlington. It's over 100 degrees by now...

A pleasant surprise awaited us at the 90 mile rest stop - Tar Heel Jeff told his crew to push on to the finish and he waited on the Two Old Guys, knowing we would need (and appreciate) the help in the last 20 miles to the Speedway. Jeff DID shave his head the night before!
